Citizen Science

What is citizen science?

Citizen science is your way to get involved in the discoveries shaping our future!
By volunteering in research activities and working hand in hand with scientists, or independently, you help ensure that research reflects and serves the general population.
It increases scientific knowledge, raises general awareness of scientific questions and allows for exchange of enthusiasm, ideas and expertise between scientists and citizens.

Food & You respects the following key principles set out by the European citizen science association:

  • Citizens are actively involved in gathering data.
  • The project has a scientific outcome.
  • Both the professional scientists and the citizen scientists benefit in taking part.
  • The participants will receive feedback from the project.
  • The data and tools generated by this project will be publicly available (anonymously).

The English term "Citizen Science" entered the Oxford English Dictionary in 2014. It is defined as:

"Scientific work undertaken by members of the general public, often in collaboration with or under the direction of professional scientists and scientific institutions."
*Disclaimer: the term "citizen" does not refer to national citizenship in any way.
